We all contain multitudes, and so do the characters we play. Our job, as actors, is to bring oceans of detail and specificity to each role and craft a story that shares our very human experience. (Even when we’re playing robots.) And through that story, hopefully we find connection and acceptance, to ourselves and each other.

I’ve brought that realization into both my acting and my coaching.

vox goddess: an origin story

I got into radio about a year after high school. Back for a visit, I told my former English teacher what I was up to and she said with a wry smile, “Of course you got a job that pays you to talk.” (That’s me, word-bag for hire!) I was already studying acting for film and theatre when radio paved the way toward voice acting. It was an immediate fit and I’ve been honing my skills ever since.

As an alt-rock deejay, I was dubbed the “Alternative Goddess” and now, I’m Vox Goddess.

Recently, a colleague mentioned that he got into acting because he was never comfortable being himself. As soon as he said it, I realized that that was true for me too. Being mixed-race (I’m Japanese and Panamanian. I’m Japanamanian) meant having a very different experience from those around me. I was always studying other people trying to learn how to fit in which, for the longest time, I thought meant making myself smaller. WRONG! I’m a big personality and I contain multitudes and once I accepted that, fitting in no longer mattered.

I play a lot of the video games I’m in. knowing the world my characters live in helps me show up more fully in the booth.

I can do an uncanny TikTok “AI” voice impression, which hailed from mimicking the ’90s answering machine outgoing message

British RP, West Irish, and Mississippi accents are all in my regular rotation. dare i say, i'm rocking an accent roladex.

When I worked in radio, I had a Chia Pet sounder for my show that included the actual Chia Pet announcer and jingle from the commercials (yes, really).
